The suburbs of Northern Virginia include Arlington County and McLean in Fairfax County. These communities offer lots of beautiful scenery and high-end amenities right across the Potomac from D.C. 

Arlington County is comprised of distinctive communities with a mix of vibrant urban and quiet suburban environments. This eclectic area’s housing options include everything from stylish high-rise condominiums to spacious single-family homes in private gated communities. This convenient area is also well-served by numerous Metro stations. 

McLean is a sought-after and secluded yet accessible community with large homes on substantial lots. It is home to the CIA headquarters while Arlington County has the Pentagon and Amazon’s HQ2 at the National Landing development. There are many diverse employment options within these Northern Virginia communities and easy access to D.C. makes them popular with politicos, journalists, and diplomats.

Northern Virginia has a huge variety of places to shop, dine, and drink. Tyson’s Corner Center is the region’s largest shopping mall. This upscale mall features more than 300 businesses, including premium fashion brands, a 16-screen movie theater, and several large department stores. The adjacent Tyson’s Galleria offers additional high-end shopping and dining options. McLean is located close to the Tyson’s area and there are many more fine restaurants within other parts of McLean. Assaggi Osteria & Pizzeria is a refined Italian eatery serving specialty fish dishes and delicious homemade pasta while J. Gilbert’s is an excellent choice for wood-fired USDA Prime steaks and seafood. L’Auberge Chez Francois in the Fairfax County community of Great Falls is an award-winning French restaurant located in a rustic farmhouse.

The area features lots of sprawling green space with nature preserves and country parks. Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts uniquely offers a range of performance spaces within a 130-acre park close to Vienna in Fairfax County. More than 100 performances take place every year at Wolf Trap venues, including the dramatic Filene Center and the intimate Children’s Theatre in the Woods

McLean’s Great Falls Park is named after its series of stunning rapids and waterfalls on the Potomac River. The park has 15 miles of hiking trails and several viewing platforms overlooking its unforgettable cascades. 

Also located in McLean, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve spans 336 acres of unspoiled woodland surrounding a Potomac tributary. This gorgeous natural expanse features thousands of plant species, including carpets of spring wildflowers, towering oak and beech trees, and a grove of ancient hemlocks from the last Ice Age.

Northern Virginia suburbs are served by the Arlington County and Fairfax County Public School Districts. The area is also home to prestigious higher education institutions, including George Mason University Law School and Marymount University.
