Chevy Chase is an easy-going neighborhood in Northwest D.C. with an eclectic mix of architectural styles. The neighborhood has a small-town feel with homes on smaller lots than the adjacent community of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Chevy Chase’s peaceful parks and tree-lined streets make it feel a world away from the bustle of Downtown D.C., yet the neighborhood is within easy reach of all of the capital’s businesses and amenities. Housing options within Chevy Chase include condominium complexes and classic single-family homes. The diverse architecture of these homes includes many well-maintained examples of Cape Cod, Colonial, Tudor, and Victorian styles.
Chevy Chase has unique local businesses such as Politics and Prose, an independent bookstore that hosts many special events. Some of the big names who have given talks at the store include President Bill Clinton and J.K. Rowling. Bucks Fishing & Camping is a popular neighborhood eatery serving wood-grilled burgers and steaks, crab cake platters, and oven-roasted chicken. The sprawling 1,754-acre Rock Creek Park runs along Chevy Chase’s eastern boundary. Miles of trails traverse through this scenic natural expanse and the park also contains many attractions and amenities. Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium is the best place to pick up trail guides and orient yourself before setting off to explore the scenery. Exhibits at the Nature Center include a children’s discovery room, live animals, and an active beehive. The Planetarium offers free shows that take visitors through the wonders of our solar system and the galaxies beyond. There are also monthly stargazing sessions between April and November.
Rock Creek Park Horse Center has D.C.’s only public riding facility. The Horse Center offers horse boarding stables, riding lessons, and horseback trail rides through Rock Creek Park. Rock Creek Park Tennis Center has more than two dozen indoor and outdoor courts with tennis lessons available for all ages and ability levels. The Tennis Center’s William H.G. Fitzgerald Stadium hosts the ATP Tour’s annual Citi Open tournament.
More sports facilities are accessible at Lafayette Recreation Center in the heart of the Chevy Chase neighborhood. The Rec Center has multi-purpose indoor rooms and outdoor baseball fields, playgrounds, tennis courts, and a splash park.
